The U.S.Japan expedition,commanded by Commodore Matthew C.Perry,had a mission to obtain open trade with Japan. All previous attempts,including four American expeditions and fourteen international expeditions,had failed to initiate trade. Commodore Perry was the first to be successful and persuaded Japan to sign the Kanagawa Treaty on March 31 1854.

Includes an engraved frontispiece portrait with a tissue guard. 9 lithograph plates,68 woodcuts,11fold out maps.Clean copy, a very tiny bit of head and tail wear, tiny bit of occasional foxing, else very nice solid copy. This is an abbreviated version of the monumental three volume set with profuse illustrations, maps, charts and drawings.The crucial part of the text dealing with the opening of Japan is complete when compared to the three volume set.
