Top edge gilt, untrimmed fore edge. Externally generally smart; the spine has faded a little, as has the cover to volume Ⅰ. Bumping to the head and tail of the spines and extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.

A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains details this fascinating account of her travels through a series of letters written to her sister, Henrietta. These letters are filled with beautiful, vivid descriptions of the scenery, the people she encountered, the way of life, and a mountain man named Jim Nugent, that was as rough as they come, but a complete gentleman with Ms. Bird. She has the distinction of being the first woman to become a member of the Royal Geographical Society in 1892.

Third Edition. Original publisher's purple full cloth binding lettered on the spine with a central device of a crane on the front board all in gilt. With two hundred and twenty illustrations. The spine cloth has faded a little as has the cover. Top&fore edge tanned and foxed. Internally firmly bound. Previous owner's name on the title page and front end paper.The pages appear to suffer slight age related yellowing.

Hardcover. Two volumes in one. Brown cloth hardcovers with beveled edges, and a gilt title on the spine. Illustrated frontispiece with a tissue guard, along with maps and illustrations. The publication date is not stated, but the preface is dated September 1880, indicating a presumed first U.S. edition. The fold-out map is positioned at the end of the book and has a small tear on the left side. The pages are generally clean, except for the tissue guard which shows some foxing. The binding and spine are firm, with some bumping to the corners of the covers as expected, and wear to the cloth at the end of the spine.

Each volume includes an engraved frontispiece with a protective tissue guard. Volume I has a fold-out map at the back, which has some splits along the bottom left edge. Profusely illustrated.There is some foxing on the title page and tissue guard of both volumes. The edges of the pages have slightly darkened over time.There is very minor wear at the bottom edge of Volume I. The text within both volumes is generally clean and crisp, although there are occasional instances of foxing. The binding of the books are solid and firm, ensuring that the volumes remain intact.
