Internally very clean and crisp for its age, with some toning and foxing to the front and rear endpapers of Essays, Vol. I, and slight toning to the top edges. Bindings tight and sound, hinges secure.

Bound in full contemporary tree calf, with red spine labels, raised bands, and gilt decoration.Marbled pastedowns, with Ex-libris to the front pastedown of each volume.Volumes I of both works contain engraved frontispiece portraits.The signature of Maria Folly, dated 1797, appears on the front free endpapers of Vols. I–VIII.Spines and joints worn; the spines of Vols. I and VIII are crudely repaired.
The front board of Vol. VIII is detached.Pages show minor age-toning, but remain generally bright and clean.A sound working set of this classic edition.

Harvard University, Dumbarton Oaks Library ex-library copies, with ex libris bookplates to the endpapers and circular “Withdrawn” stamps straddling the lower edge of the bookplates onto the front pastedowns in both volumes. Each volume bears a different handwritten serial number in the 400s (out of 500) on the leaf preceding the title page. Small previous owner’s address label to the upper right of the front free endpaper of Vol. II. Bound in semi-flexible boards. Slight curvature to the volumes, not affecting usability. Text very clean, overall a Very Good set.
