A classic 1909 volume from A. & C. Black’s Menpes Crown Series, *CHINA* features Mortimer Menpes’ color plates and text by Sir Henry Arthur Blake, former Governor of Hong Kong. The original blue cloth binding has a striking gilt design of a Chinese Dragon chasing a pearl, with blind-stamped borders. Illustrations depict late Qing Dynasty life, street scenes, and portraits such as “A Shoemaker.” Provenance includes a vintage bookseller sticker from P.M. Bazendijk, Rotterdam, and an Art Nouveau Ex Libris of A.F.C. Phaff. Condition is GOOD to FAIR: firm binding with shelf wear, bright gilt, heavy foxing throughout, but pages are complete with no text markings.
