The plastic pocketbook was born out of war-time technology; its original "designers" were manufacturers of World War II plastic parts; its "designs" broke all fashion rules. As impractical as the bags tended to be and despite their total departure from the standard idea of a handbag they were all the rage during the conformist 1950S.
