First edition. 12mo. Volume I only (of two). Bound in contemporary full vellum with raised bands and a gilt title label, with an old manuscript shelf number to spine and front cover. Title-page bears a faint university library stamp.The volume comprises 555 pages followed by 4 pages of the Privilege du Roi, as issued. Complete for this volume, containing 9 folding plates, 10 full-page plates, and 2 half-page engraved figures including the title-page engraving, all intact and well preserved; the large folding map of Siam is present and in very good condition for its age.The binding remains tight and sound. Expected wear to the vellum, with some minor worming to margins (not affecting legibility). Light age-toning and occasional browning to the text, but overall a notably clean and well-kept copy for a 17th-century French travel work. An appealing and complete example of the first volume of La Loubère’s important early account of Siam based on his 1687–1688 diplomatic mission.
