Stanley, six maps (four folding), and illustrated throughout with 28 full-page plates and numerous text illustrations after drawings by the author. Publisher’s brown cloth, blocked in black and gilt, with pictorial spine and upper board. Previous owner’s inscription dated 1924 on the front free endpaper. Boards with light wear to extremities; spine ends rubbed. A clean and sound copy, the text remarkably fresh for its age. Binding tight and secure.

First edition. Two volumes, complete. Large octavo. Bound in publisher’s original red cloth with pictorial cover design and gilt titling to the spine. Volume I with a frontispiece portrait of Lugard with tissue guard; Volume II with a frontispiece portrait of Williams with tissue guard.
Both rear boards show some discoloration, with small ownership labels affixed to the lower portion of the rear boards. The cloth on the rear board of Volume II shows some slight rippling. Previous owner’s inscriptions on the half-titles of both volumes, later crossed through. Volume I contains two folded maps in pockets at the front and rear; Volume II with one folded map, together with additional maps (both black-and-white and coloured) within the text of both volumes. Illustrated throughout with 130 plates and illustrations.
Text exceptionally clean. Binding tight and sound. A heavy set.
