Domestic gas lighting is no longer seen in our homes, having been replaced by electricity, just as gas lighting replaced paraffin lamps earlier. Gas has also been replaced in the lighting of streets and railway stations, where, in addition to the fuel change, the fittings and furniture have adopted a more modern style. This book traces the history of gas lighting from the early use of gas some two hundred years ago, through the Victorian period when gas was a growth industry, to the present day. The birth of the gas industry, when the sole use of gas was for lighting, is recorded, and the early problems of the industry are discussed. The technical progress of gas lighting is outlined, with reference to the many attempts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the gas lighting system in relation to the alternative fuels available in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
