This volume contains the Thera- and Therī-Gāthā (Verses of the Elder Monks and Nuns), an important collection of poems from the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Pāli Canon. These verses describe the spiritual journeys and enlightenment experiences of the Buddha’s earliest followers. The Therīgāthā is especially famous because it is the oldest known collection of women’s religious poetry, giving rare insight into the lives and achievements of early Buddhist nuns. This edition was published in 1966 by the Pali Text Society (PTS) in London. It is based on the classic 1883 edition by Hermann Oldenberg and Richard Pischel and includes helpful appendices by K. R.
