First edition, 1900.Original brown-beige cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and red with a motif resembling the Order of the Rising Sun on the front board; gilt titling to spine and upper cover. Frontispiece portrait of Dr. Verbeck with tissue guard. Illustrated with 12 plates, including the frontispiece. The binding shows some age-related wear with light soiling and minor rubbing to the cloth. Internally clean throughout, with no markings or foxing. A bright and sound copy overall.

Original publisher’s blue cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and red to the front board with a motif resembling the Order of the Rising Sun; gilt titling and a different gilt motif—a stylised torch or urn—on the spine. With a frontispiece portrait of Dr. Verbeck (dated 1897) with tissue guard, and a total of 12 illustrations including the frontispiece. The cloth shows general signs of age with some fading to the boards. Fraying to spine ends and corners; some wear to the cloth at the corners. Light soiling. Slight wear to the cloth along the rear outer hinge, not affecting the binding integrity. No ownership inscriptions or internal markings. A solid and presentable copy in good condition.
