A 1684 fifth edition of William Chillingworth’s The Religion of Protestants: A Safe Way to Salvation, a foundational work of Anglican theology and English religious polemic. First published in 1638 and influential on later thinkers such as John Locke, it famously defends Scripture and individual reason against Roman Catholic claims of infallibility; this edition includes additional tracts and Nine Sermons. Published in London by William Crook and Charles Harper, it is bound in contemporary full calf with raised bands and bears the ownership inscription “T. Paynter.” Condition is fair, with notable binding wear but a sound, age-toned text block.
