Complete 7 volume set in original publisher’s blue cloth binding in very good condition. Royal octavo with blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and a decorative motif on the spine, as well as a gilt medal motif on the front boards. Each volume includes a frontispiece with a tissue guard. Ex libris of Herbert John Gladstone on the front paste-down of each volume. The top page edges are gilt, fore-edges untrimmed. This set represents the first expanded edition.(Originally published in 5 vols later expanded to 7vols)Externally, the books are in excellent condition, showing only minor signs of shelf wear. They are firmly bound. Internally, there is some light foxing on the endpapers, the pages themselves are bright, with occasional light foxing. Some pages are still uncut.
