An elegant 19th-century travel account offering a French missionary’s view of Meiji-era Japan. Le Japon d’Aujourd’hui by Abbé G. Bruley des Varannes was published in 1893 by Alfred Mame et Fils in Tours, reflecting the period’s fascination with Japonisme. Richly illustrated, it depicts landscapes, customs, and daily life, with scenes of Mt. Fuji, tea harvesting, and a Shinto priest frontispiece. Bound in striking red percaline with black and gilt stamping and all edges gilt, the book remains attractive despite edge wear. The interior shows heavy foxing but is complete. Includes an old paper bookmark. A handsome and evocative volume for collectors of Japonica or decorative bindings.

A very well-preserved copy. The dust jacket shows only light fading to the spine. The text remains bright, crisp and clean throughout.

A captivating 19th-century Japonisme work: The Wonderful City of Tokio by Edward Greey, published circa 1883 (Meiji Era). This book documents Japan’s sights, customs, and daily life, featuring a striking cover of a figure riding a giant Namazu (Earthquake Catfish) over Mount Fuji. It includes numerous full-page engravings, such as the Temple of Dai-Butsu at Nara, the Ceremony of Washing the Infant Buddha, and traditional inns and street scenes. Condition is FAIR/POOR: heavily damaged spine, worn covers, scuffed illustration, and age-toned pages, but text and plates remain legible. Approx. 23.5 × 17.5 cm, sold as is.

1883年にボストンのリー・アンド・シェパード社から刊行された、エドワード・グリーによる日本見聞記です。先行作『Young Americans in Japan』の続編であり、ジュエット一家が友人オト・ナンボと共に明治初期の東京（TOKIO）を巡る冒険を描いています。

特筆すべきは、19世紀末の西洋における「ジャポニスム」を象徴する極めて独創的な装丁です。表紙には鯰（なまず）に乗る武者の姿と富士山、裏表紙には七福神の福禄寿が描かれ、随所に著者自らが考案した「江戸和留度（エドワード）」等の当て字の日本語が配されています。

本文中には当時の日本の風俗、楽器演奏（琴・三味線）、正月風景、日常生活を記録した169点もの精緻な挿絵が収録されており、明治初期の東京の姿を視覚的に伝える貴重な民俗学的資料でもあります。
