2 volume set. Consists of hardcovers bound in blue cloth, which were previously owned by a college research institute. There are small identification labels on the spine of each book cover, as well as stamps of the college and a researcher, along with withdrawn labels on the front endpapers of each book. The cloth on the upper part of the spine shows some damage, and the top page edges of both volumes have spotting. Both volumes of the text have scattered underlining and writing in pencil and red ballpoint pen in various places. Both books also contain a frontispiece along with a title page.

E. Quin Thornton, M.D.、Lea & Febiger、1911

This is a first-edition hardcover of A Manual of Materia Medica for Medical Students by E. Quin Thornton, M.D., published in 1911 by Lea & Febiger. Thornton, an Assistant Professor at Jefferson Medical College, provides a detailed record of early 20th-century pharmacology, describing the actions, preparations, and dosages of common therapeutic agents, such as Boric Acid. The book is especially notable for its two original Japanese library stamps: a purple-blue vertical stamp from the “Kōsa Byōin Library” and a red circular stamp from the “Kōyū Library” dated October 27, 1928. These mark the book’s use in Japan during the early Shōwa Period, showing its role in the introduction of Western medicine there. Condition: Good (B). Cloth binding shows shelf wear and discoloration; text block is tanned with foxing. Interior clean with toned flyleaves and stamped title page.

Hardcover. Blue cloth binding. Although the publication year is not stated, the 'Preface' indicates it to be 1903. There is a mark on the bottom of the spine where a label has been removed. The adhesive on the spine has come off, causing it to separate from the rear cloth fabric, but there are no issues with the binding as the hinge is still attached to the book. On the front endpaper, there is a small label from the bookstore, a donation stamp, and a college ex libris, as well as a 'discarded' stamp. On the half-title page, there is a 'university faculty research book Withdrawn' label. There are water stains on the upper page margins starting from the middle of the text, but they should not significantly affect readability. The book includes a fold-out map and illustrations within the text.
