A charming late 19th-century French treatise on engraving, Les Proc?d?s de la Gravure by Alfred de Lostalot, editor of the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Published in Paris by A. Quantin around 1882 as part of the Biblioth?que de l’Enseignement des Beaux-Arts. The original decorative cloth binding is signed by the Parisian binder Jean Engel (“Engel rel.” on spine) and remains attractive despite sunning and shelf wear. The text covers woodcut, etching, and lithography, with illustrations throughout. Interior shows notable foxing, especially on endpapers, but text and images are clear. Untrimmed, age-toned edges. French. 8vo.

It was written by Arthur Anthony Macdonell and Arthur Berriedale Keith. Think of it as an encyclopedia for the Vedic period. It explains all the names of people, places, and tribes, as well as subjects like daily life, laws, and religion, using examples from the original texts. This is the 1958 reprint from Motilal Banarsidass (MLBD), a well-known Indian publisher. Volume I includes the original fold-out map of VEDIC INDIA. The books themselves are in good shape. The dark green hardcovers are strong, and the bindings are secure. The pages inside are clean with no writing, though they have yellowed with age. The removable paper covers dust jackets are in poor condition. They have large tears, chips, and missing pieces, especially at the spine.
