PREFACE

The two histories of the Bka'-gdams-pa tradition included in the present volume are texts of considerable rarity. The best known chos 'byung of the Bka'- gdams-pa schools is that of Las-chen Kun-dga'-rgyal-mtshan, the Bka' gdams rin po che gsal ba'i sgron me (1494), already published in 1972 by B. Jamyang Norbu.

The first chos 'byung reproduced here is by the famed Pan-chen Bsod-nams- grags-pa. There are two sets of blocks known, the first set being carved during the time of the 5th Dalai Lama and the second during the time of De-mo Ngag-dbang- 'jam-dpal-bde-legs-rgya-mtsho.
