A Message from the Mayor
of Kyoto City
In 794, Kyoto was established as the capital of Japan.
Then known as Heian-kyo, the layout of the city was based on
that of a city in ancient China. Over the more than 1,200 years
since then, Kyoto has acquired a vast array of cultural assets,
of which more than 2,000 are designated as National
Treasures, Special Historic Sites, Special Places of Scenic
Beauty, and so on. The cultures of the various eras that created
these assets are still thriving today, and have given Kyoto a
global reputation as the treasury of Japanese culture.
In 1994, 17 of the most prominent temples, shrines and
castles were listed as World Heritage Sites, collectively as ‘the
Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (in Kyoto, Uji and Otsu
Cities).' That great event was further enhanced by the fact that
1994 was also the 1200th anniversary of the city's foundation
as the capital.
