Translated from the Japanese by H. Kaneko. First edition thus (paperback). Small 8vo. Original printed wrappers, in the original colour illustrated dust jacket. Uniform age-toning throughout the text, as commonly encountered, otherwise a very good copy. An intriguing survival from the Allied Occupation period. The front pastedown retains a contemporary Japanese business card together with several unused U.S. Air Mail 5¢ stamps, apparently left in the volume by a previous owner and naturally adhered over many decades. The card bears the name of Yoshinao Moriwaki, Site-Chief Director of the MIT Fuji Photo Artists Association, with an address at the Fuji View Hotel, providing an evocative and unusual contemporary provenance. A scarce post-war issue of Ibuse's celebrated account of John Manjiro, preserving the original English text first published before the Pacific War.

First Edition,1941. Small 8vo. Bound in the publisher's original yellow cloth, with a printed title panel to the front board and a printed paper title label to the spine. Published only months before the outbreak of the Pacific War, this uncommon English translation was intended for distribution in Japan, the United States and Europe, as evidenced by the printed prices for all three markets on the publisher's imprint page.

The page edges are evenly toned with age, and the front free endpaper and preliminary leaves show light foxing. Contemporary owner's personal seal to the front free endpaper. A single pencil underline to p. 3; otherwise the text remains clean throughout. A very good copy.
