A volume from the celebrated 19th-century French series L’Univers Pittoresque, devoted to Japan, Indo-China, and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The book contains a fold-out map of Japan (“Empire du Japon”), a map of Ceylon (“Ile de Ceylan”), and extensive text describing the history, manners, and customs of these regions, with steel engravings indicated by the “Placement des Gravures” list. Bound in original half-leather with gilt spine tooling and marbled boards. Condition is fair: leather loss at the spine head and tail, worn edges and bumped corners, with heavy foxing throughout the text block and on the maps and plates. Approx. 22 × 14 cm.
