A New Edition. 6 Volumes Complete. Original buckram cloth with gilt titles and decoration to the front board and to the spine.
The volumes are highly descriptive of all the main areas of the great City of London along with historical events and monuments. Profusely illustrated. All 6 volumes extensively illustrated with woodcuts.
Thornbury first published his work in 1872 in 2 volumes, this later edition was completed by Walford and published in 1878 as 6 volumes, Volume1 and 2 have Thornbury’s name as author and the remaining four volumes have that of Walford.
Binding remains firm. There is the usual rubbing to external corners and to the top and base of the spines. Internally the volumes are heavily foxed to the end papers and title pages, otherwise reasonably clean. Core text remains clean and bright.

Later edition.Original Publisher's Blue cloth.The 9 volumes set is extremely uncommon. Vol 9's preface dated 1883. Vol 1-8 with the complete set of 67 tissue guarded steel engraving. There are a 1000 woodcuts. Vol 4 has a fold out map of London after the 1666 fire. Originally published in 1856 in 8 vols covering through 1849. Philip Smith added the 9th vol, from 1849 to 1882, in 1883. The end of the 9th vol has the index for the first 8, immediately followed by the index for just vol 9. Brightly gilt lettered spines with title and author info followed by "With Continuation by Philip Smith B.A.", then vol # & publisher at heel. The index for the more common 8 vol set, which was at the end of vol 8, has been shifted to vol 9.
There is the usual rubbing to external corners and to the top and base of the spines.No loose pages or cracked hinges. End papers and title pages of each volumes are foxed.Contents are reasonably clean.
