First English edition. 8vo. xxxii, 608, [4]pp. Bound in contemporary full calf, retaining the original boards, later professionally rebacked with five raised bands, gilt rules and a red morocco title label lettered in gilt. The boards show general rubbing, scratches and edge wear consistent with age. The front endpaper is torn with some loss, and there are early and later ownership inscriptions and other manuscript notes to the front pastedown and endpaper. The binding remains firm and sound. Occasional light age toning and minor spotting, but the text remains generally clean and remarkably well preserved for its age. A sound copy of the scarce first English edition.
