Original publisher’s blue cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and red to the front board with a motif resembling the Order of the Rising Sun; gilt titling and a different gilt motif—a stylised torch or urn—on the spine. With a frontispiece portrait of Dr. Verbeck (dated 1897) with tissue guard, and a total of 12 illustrations including the frontispiece. The cloth shows general signs of age with some fading to the boards. Fraying to spine ends and corners; some wear to the cloth at the corners. Light soiling. Slight wear to the cloth along the rear outer hinge, not affecting the binding integrity. No ownership inscriptions or internal markings. A solid and presentable copy in good condition.
