Bound in the publisher’s original grey cloth with gilt titling to the spine. Housed in the original dust jacket, which shows mild age toning. Slight foxing to the top edge. On page 180, the word “Speak” is marked with a fluorescent pen, as shown in the photograph. Page 1077 has approximately half of the leaf cut away, otherwise the text is well preserved and generally clean throughout.

Revised and expanded from the 1903 edition by T. H. Darlow and H. F. Moule, this book is in very good condition with blue cloth and gilt vignette and spine lettering. It is an Ex-Dewsbury Library copy and has associated stamps and labels. There are some marks on the cloth, but the text is near fine with occasional pencil annotations.

Twentieth Edition.Fine full red morocco leather binding by Sotheran&Co., with the binder's stamp to the reverse of the front free end paper.Gilt decorated spine and boards,with inner gilt dentelles and marbled end papers, page edge gilt. Spine good condition gilt titles,5 raised gilt bands dividing 6 compartments,the outer edges of the spines are also gilt, worn away in places, gently worn top and tail, slightly faded, marked, worn and scratched. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition, both volumes has some wear to the boards down the edges and on the corners which has caused the gilt to wear away. Hinges are good condition. Pages are good condition lightly tanned throughout.

Page edges plain.Front pastedown contains a 'John Medows Rodwell' bookplate withe a copperplate signature underneath.New free endpapers.Pages are foxed and tanned.Hinges and binding are in good condition(repaired). 29 engraved illustrations on full page plates.One of the plates has damage with loss to the image at the middle base.Text is bright and clear.Overall a nice volume albeit worn with age.Scarce volume.One recorded at the British Library and one at the Alexander Turnbull Library.
