本書はイタリアのアンコーナ出身で後にイギリスに帰化した経済学者レオン・レヴィ―による自由主義思想に基づいて書かれた主著です。第１章は七年戦争終結からフランス革命まで（1763～1792年）、第2章はフランス革命から真価通用の再興まで（1792～1820年）、第3章は通省庁長官ウィリアム・ハスキソンの改革からロバート・ピール政権（1820～1842年）、第4章はロバート・ピール政権から1857年の恐慌（1842～1857年）、第5章はフランスとの通商条約の締結から商業の現況（1860～1870年）の全5章から構成されており、18世紀後半から19世紀後半に至る英国自由主義思想の発展を辿っています。
なお本書は1879年に日本の経済学者田口卯吉により「大英商業史」として邦訳され、同じく経済学者の土子金四郎による学校講義用の抄訳が出版されました。またレヴィ―は1874年から80年にかけてキングス・カレッジにて日本からの留学生への講義も行っており、明治期の日本ではその作品と人物共に広く知られていました。

First Edition. 8vo, xiii, 527pp, modern cloth, a few small early library marks 本書はイタリアのアンコーナ出身で後にイギリスに帰化した経済学者レオン・レヴィ―による自由主義思想に基づいて書かれた主著です。第１章は七年戦争終結からフランス革命まで（1763～1792年）、第2章はフランス革命から真価通用の再興まで（1792～1820年）、第3章は通省庁長官ウィリアム・ハスキソンの改革からロバート・ピール政権（1820～1842年）、第4章はロバート・ピール政権から1857年の恐慌（1842～1857年）、第5章はフランスとの通商条約の締結から商業の現況（1860～1870年）の全5章から構成されており、18世紀後半から19世紀後半に至る英国自由主義思想の発展を辿っています。なお本書は1879年に日本の経済学者田口卯吉により「大英商業史」として邦訳され、同じく経済学者の土子金四郎による学校講義用の抄訳が出版されました。またレヴィ―は1874年から80年にかけてキングス・カレッジにて日本からの留学生への講義も行っており、明治期の日本ではその作品と人物共に広く知られていました。参考文献：井上琢智『黎明期日本の経済思想　イギリス留学生・お雇い外国人・経済学の制度化』日本評論社 2006年 48頁
