A monumental Victorian edition of John Milton’s Paradise Lost with iconic illustrations by Gustave Doré, edited with notes and a Life of Milton by Robert Vaughan, D.D., published by Cassell Petter & Galpin, London. Undated, but a handwritten gift inscription dated May 1879 confirms publication prior to that year; the publisher’s imprint dates it to 1866–1878. Features Doré’s dramatic full-page wood engravings. Condition: Acceptable / Poor original red cloth binding with severe spine damage, worn boards, dampstaining to preliminaries, and foxing throughout. Provenance inscriptions from 1879 and 1955. Text block intact; plates suitable for reference or framing. Ideal for restoration, breakers, or a reading copy.
