Hardcover. Two-volume set. First edition. Bound in maroon cloth with gilt titles on spines. There is a classification label on the bottom of the spine of both volumes. There is shelf wear on the cover of both volumes. Fore edges untrimmed. Both volumes include engraved frontispieces. From page 121 to the end of Volume Ⅱ is uncut. There is a donation stamp on the front paste-down of both volumes and tiny bookseller's labels on the front paste-down of Volume Ⅰ. There is a label indicating that the book belonged to a university faculty research collection and a university stamp on the title page of each volume. The text is generally clean, and the bindings are sound, but page 320 of Volume Ⅱ is slightly loose.

Internally very clean and crisp for its age, with some toning and foxing to the front and rear endpapers of Essays, Vol. I, and slight toning to the top edges. Bindings tight and sound, hinges secure.

Royal octavo with blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and a decorative motif on the spine, as well as a gilt medal motif on the front boards. Each volume includes a frontispiece with a tissue guard. Ex libris of Herbert John Gladstone on the front paste-down of each volume. The top page edges are gilt, fore-edges untrimmed. This set represents the first expanded edition.(Originally published in 5 vols later expanded to 7vols)Externally, the books are in excellent condition, showing only minor signs of shelf wear. They are firmly bound. Internally, there is some light foxing on the endpapers, the pages themselves are bright, with occasional light foxing. Some pages are still uncut.
