A rare signed and inscribed First Edition of The Land of Gods and Earthquakes by anthropologist Douglas Gilbert Haring, published by Columbia University Press in 1929. The front flyleaf bears a contemporary inscription: “To my friend Fumio Nakao with best regards Douglas G. Haring,” and is numbered “Copy #35,” suggesting it was among the first personally distributed by Haring in Japan. The book is a collection of essays on Japanese culture, society, and customs during the early Showa period, covering topics such as The Yokohama That Was, Child Labor, and Cherry Blossoms and Sake, with photographic illustrations. A scarce firsthand account of the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) by American war correspondent Frederick Palmer, who was attached to the Japanese First Army under General Kuroki Tamemoto. Palmer witnessed key engagements including the Yalu River crossing and the Battle of Liaoyang, offering a valuable Western perspective on the modernization and discipline of the Imperial Japanese Army. Illustrated with numerous contemporary black-and-white photographs from the front lines. Condition is acceptable to fair only: original red cloth with gilt lettering shows heavy sunning, wear, and chipping; the front hinge is cracked but pages remain attached.
