Volume I of the scarce first edition of Forty Years of Diplomacy by Baron Roman Romanovich Rosen, published posthumously in 1922 by George Allen & Unwin (London) and Alfred A. Knopf (New York). Rosen (1847–1921) was a leading Russian imperial diplomat, serving as Minister to Japan before the Russo-Japanese War and later as Ambassador to the United States. His memoirs offer an important eyewitness account of early 20th-century diplomacy, East Asian geopolitics, and the decline of the Tsarist regime. This copy bears the vintage Isseido (Tokyo) bookseller label. Original cloth shows wear; interior heavily foxed. Volume I only, no dust jacket.

A rare signed and inscribed First Edition of The Land of Gods and Earthquakes by anthropologist Douglas Gilbert Haring, published by Columbia University Press in 1929. The front flyleaf bears a contemporary inscription: “To my friend Fumio Nakao with best regards Douglas G. Haring,” and is numbered “Copy #35,” suggesting it was among the first personally distributed by Haring in Japan. The book is a collection of essays on Japanese culture, society, and customs during the early Showa period, covering topics such as The Yokohama That Was, Child Labor, and Cherry Blossoms and Sake, with photographic illustrations. Condition is Good/Very Good: original orange cloth binding shows shelf wear but is tight; pages are uniformly age-toned, text is clean, and the inscription remains bold.
