Contemporary full leather binding with faded gilt borders to boards. Spine professionally repaired with the original spine laid down; six raised bands, the compartments with faded gilt decoration and gilt title. Binding firm and sound. Plain edges. Front pastedown bears the bookplate of John Medows Rodwell (1808–1900), English clergyman and Orientalist, best known for his English translation of the Koran (1861), with his signature beneath. New free endpapers. Some age-toning and foxing, but the text remains generally clean, bright and clear. Illustrated with 29 full-page engraved plates, including portraits and scenes of martyrdom; one plate with some loss to the image at lower centre. An attractive and well-preserved copy for its age, despite general external wear. A scarce 1752 folio edition.
