『アメリカの諸民族の起源論』は、1642年にパリでラテン語初版が刊行され後に、翌年1643年までにパリとアムステルダムで4版まで発行され、1714年にヴィッテンベルクで最終版にあたる5番目の版が発行されました。本書はエディンバラにて、限定350部（大型ペーパー版75部、小型ペーパー版275部）で刊行された私家版です。翻訳の底本には1714年の版が使われています。
