「国際法の父」と呼ばれたフーゴ―・グロティウスの晩年の著作で、彼がアメリカ先住民の起源について民俗学的手法を用いて論じた作品です。
北アメリカの先住民の起源は古代スカンジナヴィア人、ユカタン半島の先住民はエチオピア人、南米ペルーの先住民は中国人の子孫であると、グロティウス独自の見解を披露しています。
現代の視点から見れば非科学的でかなり怪しげに思えてしまう内容ですが、こうした議論が発生した背景には、ヨーロッパでまだまだ世界の真実を語っていると信じられていた聖書、その聖書に全く記されていたない「新大陸」の人々の存在をどのように説明するのかを巡って論争が勃発したことにありました。この論争は、アメリカ大陸の「発見」によりヨーロッパの宗教観や世界観が変化を始めたことを物語る出来事でした。
『アメリカの諸民族の起源論』は、1642年にパリでラテン語初版が刊行され後に、翌年1643年までにパリとアムステルダムで4版まで発行され、1714年にヴィッテンベルクで最終版にあたる5番目の版が発行されました。本書はエディンバラにて、限定350部（大型ペーパー版75部、小型ペーパー版275部）で刊行された私家版です。翻訳の底本には1714年の版が使われています。

フーゴ―・グロティウス、1884

First English edition. 8vo, 63p., original wrappers 「国際法の父」と呼ばれたフーゴ―・グロティウスの晩年の著作で、彼がアメリカ先住民の起源について民俗学的手法を用いて論じた作品です。北アメリカの先住民の起源は古代スカンジナヴィア人、ユカタン半島の先住民はエチオピア人、南米ペルーの先住民は中国人の子孫であると、グロティウス独自の見解を披露しています。現代の視点から見れば非科学的でかなり怪しげに思えてしまう内容ですが、こうした議論が発生した背景には、ヨーロッパでまだまだ世界の真実を語っていると信じられていた聖書、その聖書に全く記されていたない「新大陸」の人々の存在をどのように説明するのかを巡って論争が勃発したことにありました。この論争は、アメリカ大陸の「発見」によりヨーロッパの宗教観や世界観が変化を始めたことを物語る出来事でした。『アメリカの諸民族の起源論』は、1642年にパリでラテン語初版が刊行され後に、翌年1643年までにパリとアムステルダムで4版まで発行され、1714年にヴィッテンベルクで最終版にあたる5番目の版が発行されました。本書はエディンバラにて、限定350部（大型ペーパー版75部、小型ペーパー版275部）で刊行された私家版です。翻訳の底本には1714年の版が使われています。参考文献：柳原正治『グロティウス』清水書院 2000年
