著者であるサミュエル・ヒルが1847年から3年かけて行った、モスクワからカムチャツカ方面までのシベリア横断の旅行記。著者のヒルはこの他にもエジプト・シリアといった中東地域、南太平洋地域の旅行記も書いていることから冒険家・旅行家と思われるが、詳細はわからない。本書において注目すべき個所は、第二巻のオホーツク、カムチャツカ半島、クリル諸島（千島列島）の章。ここで、ロシア帝国と日本の境界地域、島民としてのアイヌ（アイヌという言葉は出てこないが）、択捉島や国後島について言及されている。日本とロシアの間で近代的な意味での交流+領土問題が始めるのは1855年の日露和親条約からなので、日露の近代的な国家関係が構築される以前の当該地域や住民に関する第三者からの視点と認識を確認することができる。
