This is a complete two-volume set of Hymns of the Rgveda, translated into English with a Popular Commentary by the well-known Indologist Ralph T. H. Griffith. First published in 1889, Griffith’s translation is a major work in Western Indology and is respected for following the original Vedic text closely, using traditional commentaries such as that of Sāyaṇa. This set is the Revised and Enlarged 1987 Edition, published by Munshiram Manoharlal (MRML) in New Delhi, a leading publisher of Indology and philosophy since 1952. The 1987 edition includes updated transcriptions and corrected indices for modern research use. The books are pictorial hardcovers with a light green leafy design. Condition is graded C (Acceptable) due to clear wear: the spine heads of both volumes show tearing and fraying, and the top page edges are heavily tanned. Despite this, the set remains complete and usable. Collectors value this edition for Griffith’s lasting scholarship and MRML’s respected publication.

Elegantly bound in contemporary half red morocco leather over marbled boards with red and green title labels and gilt decorated spines. Gilt titles to the red spines in the second and fourth compartments, with raised bands.
All page edges marbled, marbled boards and matching marbled endpapers. Nice bright spines, some fading and wear to one or two spines, and the odd nick to the compartments. Solid, a quality binding. Plates on thicker, card type, paper.
Scattered, marginal foxing, mainly around plates and preliminary pages. Well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong.

Twentieth Edition.Fine full red morocco leather binding by Sotheran&Co., with the binder's stamp to the reverse of the front free end paper.Gilt decorated spine and boards,with inner gilt dentelles and marbled end papers, page edge gilt. Spine good condition gilt titles,5 raised gilt bands dividing 6 compartments,the outer edges of the spines are also gilt, worn away in places, gently worn top and tail, slightly faded, marked, worn and scratched. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition, both volumes has some wear to the boards down the edges and on the corners which has caused the gilt to wear away. Hinges are good condition. Pages are good condition lightly tanned throughout.

First Edition. Original publisher's blue buckram cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Frontispiece of Sir Henry Dickens detached but still laid in. There is a message and signature of Sir Henry Dickens' wife and a small piece of paper with a signature that seems to be of Sir Henry Dickens posted on the subtitle page. Some foxing to the pages. Apart from the detached frontispiece, the book is in good shape.
