A scarce first edition of La Femme qui a connu l’Empereur by Hugues Rebell (Georges Grassal), published in Paris by Mercure de France in 1898. Issued on regular paper, the novel reflects Rebell’s fascination with history and sensuality and belongs to the Fin de Siècle milieu. The book includes a printed dedication to the poet Lionel des Rieux.

Bound in quarter cloth with patterned paper boards, it measures about 19.5 × 13 cm. Condition is good to fair: the paper is toned and foxed throughout, the binding is sound with wear to corners and edges, and the text is clean.

A foundational study of demonic and Gothic themes in 19th-century French literature. Condition: Good (B), with very heavy age-toning/browning, minor rubbing, and slight spine-edge fraying; structurally sound and complete. Copyright 1960. Height under 22 cm. A scarce early Corti reprint, highly desirable for collectors of French Romanticism, Decadence, and literary criticism.
