Written at a pivotal moment in East Asian history, it focuses on Korea, Manchuria, China, and the social and economic aspects of Japan, including a chapter on “The Status of Women: The Life of the Geisha.” Includes a fold-out Sketch Map of China and Manchuria. Condition: Grade C (Fair/Poor) orphan volume with heavy foxing, worn and stained red cloth, pencil inscription on rear flyleaf; map present. This auction offers a rare set of 8 consecutive issues (out of 10) of the French academic journal Bulletin d’Études Indiennes (Journal of Indian Studies), published between 1983 and 1992. Founded by well-known Indologists Nalini Balbir and Georges-Jean Pinault, the journal was produced by the French Association for Sanskrit/Indian Studies. It contains advanced research and reviews on Sanskrit philology, Indian history, religion, philosophy, and art, with a focus on ancient India in the French scholarly tradition. Each volume features a line drawing of the Hindu god Ganesha on the cover. Some issues were supported by the CNRS and the University of Paris-III, showing their academic value. Condition: Good (B). Light sunning, age-toning, minor wear, and some foxing on the top edges. No major damage or markings. Includes: 8 volumes (Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7–8, 9, 10). No. 5 is missing.

Historically important auction catalog from the celebrated sale of the Edmond and Jules de Goncourt Library, Livres Modernes, held at H?tel Drouot, Paris, April 1897. This is an annotated copy, with extensive handwritten ink notes beside lot numbers identifying buyers?and possibly prices?names such as Semme, Fleury, and Lorange clearly visible. A Japanese note suggests it may have been the auctioneer’s working copy, or one used immediately after the sale to record results. Includes the famous engraved frontispiece of the Goncourt brothers and the facsimile of Edmond de Goncourt’s will. Half-leather binding, worn but solid; interior foxed but firm. A rare and valuable witness to a landmark literary auction.
