仏教伝道協会 (BDK) による仏典英訳事業「BDK English Tripiṭaka」シリーズの一冊で、『歎異抄』と『蓮如上人御文』を英訳で収録した書。
前者は唯円による親鸞の言葉の記録で、信仰の逸脱を嘆きつつ浄土真宗の信心理解を伝える重要文献、後者は蓮如の書簡をまとめたもので、室町期以降の真宗教団の教化を知る基本史料として知られる。
本書は大正新脩大蔵経 (T83 No.2661、T74 No.2668) を底本に、坂東性純・Harold Stewart、Ann T. Rogers・Minor L. Rogers らによって英訳されたもの。
シリーズは沼田恵範により構想された英訳大蔵経計画の一環として刊行され、仏教典籍を英語圏へ広く紹介することを目的としている。
総合標題紙・総合目次、および各冊標題紙・目次を備え、BDK English Tripiṭaka 第105-II・106-I巻に相当。
