長谷川武次郎・弘文社によって発行されたちりめん本は、江戸時代以来の美しい木版挿絵と欧文活字の物語を印刷した和紙を圧縮してクレープ状に加工して仕上げた和装本であり、極めて優れた工芸品と評価され、明治期に来日した外国人にお土産として非常に珍重されていました。ただ、長谷川武次郎の当初の関心としては、海外向けのお土産品作成や日本の文化紹介といったことよりは、日本人の外国語学習を促進する教科書販売の方に力を入れようとしていました。単語や文法といったことに捕らわれず、だれもが一度は慣れ親しんだことのある日本昔話を通して外国語に馴染む学習図書、現代風に言うと多読本のような図書の発行を目指していたといわれています。そのために発行されたのが、墨摺版と呼ばれる本品です。外装は紐綴じ、表紙は茶色無地で題簽が貼ってあるだけで、図版に彩色も無くちりめん本と比べれば非常に地味な作りとなっています。墨摺版は英語、ドイツ語、フランス語版の発行が確認されています。
ちりめん本がお土産として所有者により一定期間は保存されることが期待されるのに対して、この墨摺版は学習を主眼に置いたものであるため、外国語学習という当初の目的が達せられた後には、その地味な外見も相まってか、保存されることもなく散逸したり、破棄されてしまっていたようです。そのため、現在ではちりめん本そのものよりもかえって希少な存在となっており、古書市場でもめったに出てくることはありません。

18.5x13cm, no pagination [18pp], original double folded Japanese plane paper, string for binding lost, title pated on front cover, front cover wormed, top of page 1-6 wormed, but not affected on contents 虫食い跡があるが、専門的な修復が行われている長谷川武次郎・弘文社によって発行されたちりめん本は、江戸時代以来の美しい木版挿絵と欧文活字の物語を印刷した和紙を圧縮してクレープ状に加工して仕上げた和装本であり、極めて優れた工芸品と評価され、明治期に来日した外国人にお土産として非常に珍重されていました。ただ、長谷川武次郎の当初の関心としては、海外向けのお土産品作成や日本の文化紹介といったことよりは、日本人の外国語学習を促進する教科書販売の方に力を入れようとしていました。単語や文法といったことに捕らわれず、だれもが一度は慣れ親しんだことのある日本昔話を通して外国語に馴染む学習図書、現代風に言うと多読本のような図書の発行を目指していたといわれています。そのために発行されたのが、墨摺版と呼ばれる本品です。外装は紐綴じ、表紙は茶色無地で題簽が貼ってあるだけで、図版に彩色も無くちりめん本と比べれば非常に地味な作りとなっています。墨摺版は英語、ドイツ語、フランス語版の発行が確認されています。ちりめん本がお土産として所有者により一定期間は保存されることが期待されるのに対して、この墨摺版は学習を主眼に置いたものであるため、外国語学習という当初の目的が達せられた後には、その地味な外見も相まってか、保存されることもなく散逸したり、破棄されてしまっていたようです。そのため、現在ではちりめん本そのものよりもかえって希少な存在となっており、古書市場でもめったに出てくることはありません。
