This is a scarce and important academic book titled Physiologic Disposition of Drugs of Abuse, published in the United States in 1976. It contains a bookplate from the 'Society of Writers to His Majesty's Signet' and a small ownership signature on the front paste-down. Additionally, there is a small library stamp on the title page. The upper part of the hinge joint on the rear board is cracked for about 3cm, but the board is firmly attached. The hinge paper of front and rear slightly cracked but holding well.There is moderate toning to the interior, but all text remains legible.

ポーランド一月蜂起時に翻訳されたミルの代表作。本書は英国の政治哲学者J.S.ミルの代表作であった「自由論」をポーランド語に初めて翻訳した書籍である。翻訳を行ったのはポーランドのダルヌフ出身で、文芸雑誌の他にも政治記事も多く執筆していた文筆家ユリウシュ・スタルケルであった。1863年1月ロシア領ポーランドにおいて一月蜂起が勃発した際に彼はドイツから帰国して蜂起に参加を試みるが、ロシア当局に拘束され、その後ルヴフに逃亡。本書「自由論」の翻訳はその際に取り組むことになった。スタルケルが翻訳に取り組んだ理由は、本書に序言等が無いので具体的には不明であるが、専制や国家権力に対する個人の自由の保障を謳うミルの「自由論」だけに、専制・国家権力＝ロシアに対抗する自由の保障＝ポーランドの独立を前提の下で翻訳を行ったものと思われる。因みにスタルケルは日本が日露戦争で勝利した1904年に「日本の印象」という書籍を発行している。ロシア帝国を打ち破り短期間で強国となった日本の気風を学ぶべきとの考えから、一貫して対ロシアへの意識は高かったことがわかる。
またこの一月蜂起は、後にポーランドナショナリズムの潮流において「有機的労働」の路線が主流を占めるようになるきっかけとなる事件であった。この路線は、1831年の十一月蜂起、1848年のポーゼン蜂起、そして1863年の一月蜂起の失敗から武装蜂起路線を否定して、合法的な社会・経済・文化活動を通してポーランドの社会発展を図るものであった。スタルケルの「自由論」翻訳も、武装蜂起よりも合法的な知的活動によりポーランドの文化的な復興を果たそうという、この「有機的労働」の潮流を表明していたものと言える。
なお本書はポーランド統一労働者党に対する反体制運動の中心地の一つであったシュチェチンの貸本屋の旧蔵書である。

First edition in Polish. 8vo, [iv], 242, [1]pp, contemporary half calf, small prize stamp partly removed from title-page and repaired, bookseller's stamp to the title and first leaf of text ポーランド一月蜂起時に翻訳されたミルの代表作。本書は英国の政治哲学者J.S.ミルの代表作であった「自由論」をポーランド語に初めて翻訳した書籍である。翻訳を行ったのはポーランドのダルヌフ出身で、文芸雑誌の他にも政治記事も多く執筆していた文筆家ユリウシュ・スタルケルであった。1863年1月ロシア領ポーランドにおいて一月蜂起が勃発した際に彼はドイツから帰国して蜂起に参加を試みるが、ロシア当局に拘束され、その後ルヴフに逃亡。本書「自由論」の翻訳はその際に取り組むことになった。スタルケルが翻訳に取り組んだ理由は、本書に序言等が無いので具体的には不明であるが、専制や国家権力に対する個人の自由の保障を謳うミルの「自由論」だけに、専制・国家権力＝ロシアに対抗する自由の保障＝ポーランドの独立を前提の下で翻訳を行ったものと思われる。因みにスタルケルは日本が日露戦争で勝利した1904年に「日本の印象」という書籍を発行している。ロシア帝国を打ち破り短期間で強国となった日本の気風を学ぶべきとの考えから、一貫して対ロシアへの意識は高かったことがわかる。またこの一月蜂起は、後にポーランドナショナリズムの潮流において「有機的労働」の路線が主流を占めるようになるきっかけとなる事件であった。この路線は、1831年の十一月蜂起、1848年のポーゼン蜂起、そして1863年の一月蜂起の失敗から武装蜂起路線を否定して、合法的な社会・経済・文化活動を通してポーランドの社会発展を図るものであった。スタルケルの「自由論」翻訳も、武装蜂起よりも合法的な知的活動によりポーランドの文化的な復興を果たそうという、この「有機的労働」の潮流を表明していたものと言える。なお本書はポーランド統一労働者党に対する反体制運動の中心地の一つであったシュチェチンの貸本屋の旧蔵書である。
