Jean Moréas、Mercure de France、1959、19 x 13 cm
Up for auction is a vintage 1959 edition of Les Stances by Jean Moréas, published by Mercure de France in Paris. This copy is uncut, meaning the page edges were never opened, so it remains clean, unread, and ideal for collectors.
The Work: Les Stances (1899–1901) is considered Moréas’s finest book. After leaving early Symbolism, he helped create the École Romane, calling for clear French style, classical form, and Mediterranean themes. These poems are known for their calm sadness and perfect rhythm, and they influenced writers such as Paul Valéry and Charles Maurras.
The Edition: Printed on July 30, 1959, in the Mercure de France “Collection Ivoire,” it was produced by the respected Imprimerie Darantiere in Dijon, famed for printing Joyce’s Ulysses. The typography is sharp and typical of quality French letterpress printing.
Softcover, 19×13 cm, very good vintage condition with light toning, foxing, and a tight spine.
