This scholarly work compiles translations of early Japanese documents on Christianity with British Consular Reports on the 1868–1872 persecutions (Urakami incidents), covering the Shimabara Rebellion, Kakure Kirishitan (Hidden Christians), and Japan’s reopening. Includes a large colored fold-out map of Nagasaki (reproduced from a Japanese map of June 1802) showing Dutch and Chinese factories. Signed on the flyleaf by W. H. de Roos (Kobe, 17.6.33), a notable Dutch diplomat and scholar. A fine example of pre-war English-language publishing in Kobe. Condition: Very Good firm blue cloth with minor corner bumps, clean age-toned pages, excellent map; catalog slip attached to contents page.
